IMG 7842revRev. Samuel L. Harris, 76, of Bardstown, KY, died Sunday, April 5, 2015, 11:00 A.M. at the Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

He was born September 1, 1938 in Kerens, TX to Ruby and James Harris. He was preceded in death by both parents, his son, Lester Earl Harris, daughter, Andrea Harris, brother, Orris Charles Rhynes and sister, Betty K. Giles.

He was the Pastor of St. John A.M.E. Zion Church in Bardstown, KY for five years. His military background consists of C.I.D., Military Police and served 10 years in the U.S. Army. He also enjoyed carpentry work.

In addition, he graduated  from Jarvis Christian College with a BA Degree, Prairie View A&M College with a Master’s Degree, Moody Bible College in Chicago, IL, Ordained Elder of the A.M.E. Zion Church, Pastored  11 Churches, and held Conference Offices for the following:  Madisonville & Bardstown District Conference as Treasurer, Studies Committee District & Annual Conference, Annual Conference Trustee, Annual Conference Holy Orders Committee, Past President of the Muhlenberg County N.A.A.C.P, and Honorary Member of the Common Wealth of Kentucky Colonel.   

Survivors include; one son, Zen Terry Harris, Ft. Worth, TX; two daughters; Sherri Harris (Lamont) Thompson, Adairville, KY and Sandra Ann Harris, Ft. Worth, TX; a long life companion, Freda Drake, Bowling Green, Ky; seven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; six brothers, Matthew Rhynes, Dallas, TX, Willie (Dorothy) Rhynes, Powell, TX, Harvey (Vanessa) Rhynes, Dallas, TX, Walter (Ernestine) Rhynes, Dallas, TX, James (Sadie) Rhynes, Waco, TX, and Kenneth (Eva) Rhynes, Dallas,TX; three sisters, Zephyr (Joe) Lott, Kerens, TX, Myrtle McClendon, Dallas, TX and Carolyn Rhynes, Waco, TX; several uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 11, 2015, 12 noon at  St. John A.M.E. Zion        Church, in Bardstown, KY. Visitation 10-12 at the church. Burial in West End Cemetery, Greenville, KY. Bibbs Funeral Home, Greenville, is in charge of arrangements. Rev. Roland Puryear, Eulogist, Presiding Elder James Tutt, Officiating.
